What is “OH!JHB” ?

“OH!JHB” Overheard Joburg (@overheard_jhb) is a localized comedy and lifestyle Instagram account that posts funny, absurd, and highly relatable snippets of out-of-context conversations eavesdropped on the streets of Johannesburg.

We’ve created an OH!JHB book, capturing the city's stray conversations, private confessions, and passing jokes. Compiled from voices recorded and submitted by Johannesburg residents and visitors, this stunt-turned-anthology turns everyday eavesdropping into a collective memory project. Each entry, a fragment of market banter, a tram-side whisper, a rooftop laugh, maps the textures of life in Jo’burg: its humour, its grief, its resilience. Read it as a soundscape frozen on the page, a citizen-made archive of what the city could not keep to itself. Pick it up, listen in, and recognise the city you thought you knew.
